Text Box: Family Sabbath Time

Text Box: Read Luke 1:68-79

This is the song of a man whose dreams had just been fulfilled.  Zechariah was the father of John, and Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were much too old to bear a child when the angel Gabriel came to Zechariah in the temple.  When the angel came telling Zechariah that Elizabeth would bear a son, the old man was literally struck speechless and was mute for her entire pregnancy.  His mouth was finally opened when, in obedience to the angel, he named the newborn child John.  All those who knew of what had happened wondered what would become of this child, for God’s hand was so apparent in his birth.  Zechariah, too, stood in awe of the workings of God in his life and that is what prompted these words of scripture.
Read them is several translations of the Bible.
What thoughts and emotions are stirred in you as you read?  Spend a few moments simply enjoying the poetry and the grand languages and promises.  Let these words fill your heart and lift your spirit.

Zechariah sings of freedom, deliverance, and mercy.  How have you experienced the freedom, deliverance, and mercy of God?
In The Message, verse 68 says, God “has set the power of salvation in the center of our lives.”  What does that mean to you?  Is that a promise you have seen fulfilled in your life?  How does that change you?  If the power of salvation is in the center of your life, what does that mean for the way that you live your life in the world?

God reveals all of this to Zechariah when he looks into the face of his newborn son.  What do you see when you look into the face of a child?  What are your hopes as you think of the next generation?  What are your prayers for them and your commitments to them?

Although these words were inspired by John and about him in many ways, they point to the one who would come after him, Jesus.  What do these words teach us about Jesus and his mission in the world?  How are we as his followers continuing his mission?

Pray today for those who wait for the fulfillment of God’s promise in their lives.  Pray for those who long for children but do not have them.  Pray for children.  Ask God to speak to you.  Listen.  Sit in silence with the word and the promise of God.  Then consider writing your own song of praise.
Text Box: Our gift to you is time with your family.  We also want to offer this resource to you for nurturing faith in your children and youth and for keeping the baptismal promises to raise your children in God’s Word.  If you are finished with breakfast and study and would like to join us at 11:00 for worship, come on.  If you have other things that need your attention in the middle of the day, go do those things and then come to worship at 5:30 pm.  We will worship with you and celebrate Sabbath together when we gather.  God bless!
